Embarrassing TV news appearances from 1997

Basically, in 1997, after 5 years self-publishing, I got signed by Fantagraphics and won a Harvey Award for Best New Talent (both big deals in the alt-comics world, not so big in the rest of the world).

The Chicago Reader picked it up. Then, because the media was having a “Biff! Bang! Pow! Comics Aren’t Just for Kids Anymore!” moment, the Chicago Tribune wrote me up. Then two local TV news programs put me on the air, LIVE.

It was a different world, folks.

I promised this wouldn’t take more than 5 minutes, so here are a couple stills.

If you actually watch them,
it’ll take more like 10…

Wow, you went there.

You’re a real one.

You know what that means?

I want YOU.

For the Artbabe Army International.

I’m reopening recruitment for the first time since 2002.

And YOU are exactly the kind of footsoldier I know we need.

(Note: this was my real mailing list signup from 1998-2002! My email address was commander-in-chief… ah, youth... 🙄)
